French Market expands storefront in Prairie Village, adding grab‑and‑go counter

Prairie Village residents received a fresh look at a beloved neighborhood eatery this week. French Market, the French‑style café and specialty grocery located at 6945 Tomahawk Road, opened an expanded storefront that adds a dedicated grab‑and‑go counter and separate checkout stations for dine‑in and retail customers.

Family‑run business grows to meet demand

Co‑owner Noah Quillec explained to Johnson County Post reporter Lucie Krisman that the addition was driven by the steady stream of customers who “see the line and just walk out.” By creating a distinct counter for quick purchases, the restaurant hopes to keep the line moving while still offering the intimate café experience that long‑time patrons love.

“Each component of French Market is going to be improved for us logistically and, I think the customer experience will too,” Quillec said. The new layout also includes dedicated checkout lanes for those buying groceries or specialty items, reducing wait times for shoppers who stop by after work or on the way to other errands.

Maintaining the café’s character

Despite the added square footage, Quillec emphasized that the core “ethos” of French Market will remain unchanged. “We don’t want to lose our identity or our character by going too big. This is still our family working here every day,” he noted. The expansion reflects a careful balance between growth and the family‑centric values that have made the shop a staple for Prairie Villagers seeking a quick lunch, a selection of imported groceries, or a treat of fresh macarons.

Local shoppers have praised the café for its warm service and European‑inspired menu, and the new grab‑and‑go option is expected to attract even more on‑the‑go families and professionals. The addition also creates a few new part‑time positions, supporting the local job market.

Community response

Neighbors expressed enthusiasm for the upgrade, noting that French Market’s presence adds both culinary variety and a sense of community to the Shops of Prairie Village. “It’s great to see a family business thriving and adapting to our needs,” said longtime resident Maria Hernandez, who frequently stops by for a coffee and a pastry.

The expansion aligns with broader trends in Johnson County, where small businesses are modernizing to meet changing consumer habits while preserving the personal touch that larger chains often lack. French Market’s approach—enhancing convenience without sacrificing its family‑run charm—offers a model for other local entrepreneurs.

Looking ahead

With the new space now open, French Market plans to continue offering seasonal French specialties and may introduce additional menu items based on customer feedback. The owners remain committed to serving the Prairie Village community, reinforcing the idea that a thriving local economy starts with businesses that listen to and adapt for their neighbors.
