NY Liberty displays pro‑trans messages on scoreboard amid counter‑protest at Barclays Center

On Saturday night the New York Liberty defeated the Indiana Fever 109‑102 at Barclays Center. During halftime the arena’s scoreboard displayed three messages that welcomed and affirmed transgender fans, including “Big welcome to the NY Liberty transgender fan community! So excited to be here with you all!!” and “You are loved and you belong.”

Scoreboard controversy

The messages were part of a halftime program that also featured a planned submission from hip‑hop artist Julie Potter. Potter had paid $100 for a custom scoreboard message that originally read, “Thank you Jennifer Sey! XX‑XY Athletics will Save the Day!!” The Liberty accepted her payment but, the day before the game, changed the wording to “Thank you Jennifer Sey, thank you for all you do for XX‑XY Athletics.” When Potter objected, the team refunded the $100 fee and allowed her to keep her tickets.

Liberty officials said scoreboard content must be “positive, celebratory” and that submissions that could be perceived as violating that spirit are not eligible. The team has not explained why Potter’s original wording was deemed ineligible.

Outside protest

Outside the arena a sizable crowd of transgender activists staged a counter‑protest to the ninth Sophie Cunningham rally of the season. The protesters refused to speak with Fox News Digital, surrounding a reporter, waving flags, placing a sticker on his back, and chanting “trans lives matter!” for nearly a minute. A photographer who was filming the encounter reported that protesters removed his glasses and did not return them.

New York City police later escorted the reporter from the crowd for his safety. An ambassador for the protesters told the outlet that the group had agreed in advance not to grant media interviews as a gesture of solidarity.

Team and player reactions

Liberty forward Sophie Cunningham addressed the demonstrations before the game, noting that the attention highlighted the league’s growing platform. She said the increased visibility was positive, bringing new fans to women’s basketball and inspiring young people who may not have previously followed the sport.

The Liberty’s halftime messages and the outside protest illustrate the ongoing cultural conversation surrounding transgender issues in sports and public venues. While the team emphasized an inclusive atmosphere for all fans, the protest highlighted the passionate advocacy on both sides of the debate.
