Enes Kanter Freedom ejected after clash with Chicago Sky guard at Wintrust Arena

On Sunday night at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, former NBA big man Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from the Indiana Fever‑Chicago Sky WNBA matchup after a heated exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. The confrontation occurred late in the third quarter, shortly after the Fever called a timeout with 1:22 remaining.

What happened on the court

Freedom was seated along the baseline wearing a black shirt that read “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” When the Fever’s Natasha Cloud scored inside and celebrated with a chest bump alongside teammate Aicha Coulibaly, she turned toward Freedom, began yelling and pointing, and approached him. Security and several Sky players moved between the two as Freedom raised his arms and took a step onto the court.

Chicago forward Azura Stevens later described the incident as a “fan incident” that security handled, adding that the team would focus on the game after the Sky’s 113‑90 loss.

Team reactions

Sky head coach Tyler Marsh said Cloud was worried she might be a distraction for the team. “I told her she wasn’t,” Marsh said. “We all embrace her as someone that protects our team and protects people that need to be protected, and we stand for Tash.”

Indiana star Caitlin Clark, who was in the huddle at the time, said she did not see the confrontation and suggested the question be directed to Chicago.

After being escorted off the court, Freedom pleaded his case to security, spun around holding his shirt aloft, and encouraged the crowd to respond as he walked toward the arena lobby. He later spoke with a group of police officers before leaving the venue.

Broader context

The incident comes amid ongoing debate about whether transgender women—people assigned male at birth who transition to align with their gender identity—should be allowed to compete in the WNBA. The league’s collective bargaining agreement limits participation to women but does not specifically address gender identity or sex assigned at birth.

Fever guard Sophie Cunningham recently told ESPN she opposes transgender girls and women competing in girls’ and women’s sports. Both Freedom and former NBA player Royce White have publicly declared they would be eligible for the WNBA draft, identifying as women. Prior to the game, Freedom joined a small rally outside the arena in support of Cunningham’s stance.

League and fan response

After the game, Cloud met with team and league security but declined media comments. Marsh praised the league and its players, stating, “If you come to a game you should probably come to enjoy the basketball, and that seems pretty simple to me. I think these players deserve that and have earned that. Being a former basketball player, you should probably understand and feel that too.”

The episode highlights the tension between the league’s inclusive policies and the concerns of some players and fans who feel the presence of transgender athletes may affect competitive fairness.
