Nevada County Sheriff issues evacuation warning as vegetation fire burns near Floriston

Fire crews are on the scene of a vegetation fire that ignited near Floriston, California, just across the Nevada state line. CAL‑FIRE estimates the blaze has consumed about 20 acres since it was first reported around 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Evacuation warning issued

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has issued an official evacuation warning for Zone NCO‑379. The warning, posted at 10:58 a.m., covers the area surrounding Highway 80 and Floriston Way. Residents in the zone are being asked to leave their homes immediately and seek shelter in designated safe locations.

“We are closely monitoring the fire and will provide updates as conditions change,” the sheriff’s office said in a tweet accompanying the warning. “Our top priority is the safety of our community members and first‑responders.”

Response efforts

Firefighters from multiple agencies, including CAL‑FIRE and local volunteer units, have been dispatched to the scene. Crews are working to establish containment lines and protect nearby structures. Thick plumes of smoke are visible across the valley, prompting concerns about air quality for nearby neighborhoods.

Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Investigators are conducting a thorough review of the area to identify any potential ignition sources.

What residents should do

Anyone receiving the evacuation notice should follow these steps:

  • Leave the evacuation zone immediately and avoid returning until an official “all clear” is announced.
  • Take essential items such as medications, identification, and important documents.
  • Stay informed through the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Twitter feed, local radio stations, and the Genasys Protect alert system.

Residents who remain outside the evacuation zone are advised to keep windows and doors closed to limit smoke infiltration and to monitor local air‑quality reports.

Looking ahead

The fire is expected to remain active through the afternoon as crews continue to work on containment. Weather conditions, including wind direction and humidity, will play a critical role in the fire’s behavior. Authorities have asked the public to refrain from any activities that could spark additional fires, such as open burning or use of fireworks, until the situation is fully under control.

For the latest updates, residents can follow the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office on Twitter or visit the Genasys Protect website for real‑time evacuation information.
