Montgomery County Commissioners Scrutinize $500K Funding for Whitewater Park

Montgomery County commissioners are taking a close look at the budget line for Montgomery Whitewater as they prepare the county’s 2027 fiscal plan. During the most recent commission meeting, three members expressed doubts about the $500,000 earmarked for the outdoor recreation complex, a figure that has remained unchanged from the previous year’s budget.

Funding questions amid unchanged allocation

The $500,000 allocation, intended to support the park’s operations and future development, has drawn scrutiny because it does not reflect any increase despite rising costs and expanded attractions. In July 2025, commissioners approved an additional $1 million to cover operating expenses and existing bills, but the $500,000 capital line for new projects has stayed static.

Park leadership responds

The chairman of the board that oversees Montgomery Whitewater thanked the commission for past support and announced that the board is commissioning an independent audit. The audit is meant to provide greater transparency into the park’s financial health and to address the commissioners’ concerns.

Recent leadership change and maintenance pause

Earlier this year, Jason Wilson stepped down as the park’s executive director after serving nearly a year. Montgomery County Community Cooperative District Chairman Bobby Jon Drinkard told Action 8 News that the board decided a leadership change was necessary after a comprehensive review of overall operations, emphasizing that Wilson “didn’t do anything wrong.” The park also paused all water activities for a month during spring maintenance, a temporary measure that did not affect the overall development timeline.

Development progress and future plans

Only about half of the 120‑acre Montgomery Whitewater property has been developed so far. Recent additions include a ropes course and a zip line, and planners have announced intentions to build a hotel on the site in the future. The attraction originally opened to the public in July 2023 and has since become a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Upcoming budget vote

The five‑member county commission is scheduled to vote on the full $183 million budget next Tuesday. The outcome of that vote will determine whether the $500,000 allocation for Montgomery Whitewater remains in place, is adjusted, or is re‑allocated to other county priorities.

What this means for the community

For residents who enjoy the park’s amenities, the commissioners’ review underscores a commitment to fiscal responsibility while still supporting recreational opportunities. The audit’s findings will likely shape future funding decisions and could influence plans for additional attractions, such as the proposed hotel, that aim to boost tourism and local economic activity.

Action 8 News will continue to follow the budget vote and the results of the upcoming audit, providing updates on how Montgomery County’s financial stewardship impacts the Whitewater park and the broader community.
