A Mississippi family is calling for transparency and a deeper investigation into the death of their 18-year-old son, Nolan Xavier Wells, who was found dead after a July 4 boat trip to an island off the Gulf Coast.
Investigation and Autopsy
Attorneys for the family, including noted civil rights attorney Ben Crump, have raised concerns about the investigation and plan to conduct an independent autopsy. Wells’ body was found early Monday morning, more than a day after he failed to return with his friends from the trip.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has said that investigators do not suspect foul play in Wells’ death, but the sheriff has asked for any witnesses or people with video from the island to come forward to help shed light on the moments before Wells’ disappearance and death.
Family’s Concerns
Wells’ family has raised questions about the investigation, including why his friends took his phone and keys when they departed the island, and why no one would have given him a ride home if he chose to stay. The family has also seen video of a fight allegedly involving Wells and has concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Crump has called for a thorough investigation, saying that the family wants to know what happened to their son and why he did not come home. He has also questioned why the investigation has not been more thorough, given the circumstances of Wells’ death.
