Five years ago, Luke Prokop became the first openly gay player under contract with an NHL team, setting him on a path that brought both attention and responsibility to represent and help his community.

Today, Prokop is still shouldering much of that weight alone, as there are no other openly gay players in the NHL. A new documentary, “The Hockey Player”, follows Prokop as he balances his professional career with his role as a trailblazer in the sport.
Prokop, who was drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2020, has been bombarded with questions about inclusivity issues in ice hockey and lends an ear to those seeking guidance whenever he can. Despite the pressure, Prokop believes the sport is moving in the right direction, citing the success of the HBO series “Heated Rivalry”, which follows the romantic relationship between two gay ice hockey players.
The documentary, presented in partnership with OUTtv, is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon Prime Video, and will be available on OUTtv later this year.
