Nearly a year after passenger rail service returned to the Gulf Coast, officials say the Amtrak Mardi Gras Line is outperforming expectations and drawing strong support from riders across the region. The route, which connects Mobile, Ala., with New Orleans and includes stops along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, has seen ridership numbers that exceed initial projections, according to the Southern Rail Commission.
Positive Feedback from Riders
Passengers say the service offers a convenient alternative to driving, especially for those traveling between Gulf Coast destinations. “It was a good idea. Quick and easy. Don’t have to worry about driving in traffic,” rider Aaron Oliver said.
The positive feedback was echoed during the Southern Rail Commission’s quarterly meeting earlier this month. Commission Chair Knox Ross said the Mardi Gras Line launched with roughly double the ridership of comparable passenger rail services and continues to receive high marks from travelers. “It’s the most successful train as far as onboard experience. It gets the highest ratings, over 95% satisfaction,” Ross said.
Future Expansion Opportunities
Encouraged by the line’s success, rail leaders are already exploring future expansion opportunities. One proposal would extend passenger rail service west to Baton Rouge, creating a direct connection between two of Louisiana’s largest cities and potentially attracting even more riders. Looking further ahead, the Southern Rail Commission is also studying the feasibility of a passenger rail corridor linking Dallas and Atlanta along the Interstate 20 corridor, a project that could significantly expand rail travel options across the South.
