A federal health advisory committee has recommended approval of a new flu vaccine made with mRNA technology, which could provide better protection against the flu for older Americans.
mRNA Technology
The vaccine, developed by Moderna, uses the same mRNA technology that was used to create COVID-19 vaccines. This technology allows for faster production of vaccines, which could be beneficial in the event of a flu outbreak.
In a study of 40,000 people aged 50 and older, the mRNA vaccine reduced flu cases by about 27% compared to a standard flu vaccine. In a smaller study of people 65 and older, the mRNA vaccine also generated a strong protective immune response.
The FDA will consider the advisory committee’s recommendation in making a final decision on the vaccine’s approval by early August.
