Lookout Eugene‑Springfield announced today that Annie Aguiar, the outlet’s longtime arts and culture correspondent, has been promoted to audience editor. In her new role she will oversee audience development for both Lookout Eugene‑Springfield and Lookout Santa Cruz, effective immediately.
Aguiar’s work on Instagram helped grow the platform’s audience by nearly 50% over the summer, turning the channel into a primary source for community news. “She is skilled at finding ways to get our stories to people in our community, and it has worked,” said Lookout Local chief of staff Ashley Harmon.
Why the promotion matters
As Lookout continues to expand its reach in the Eugene‑Springfield area, a dedicated audience editor is vital for ensuring that local reporting reaches residents where they consume news—social media, the Lookout app, the website, and email newsletters. “It’s all about making sure our communities get the local news they need, and with Annie on the team we’ll do that even better,” Harmon added.
Aguiar, who earned a first‑place award in the Best of the West journalism competition, said she is grateful for the opportunity. “I started in journalism because I loved designing newspapers. Anyone who has designed anything knows it’s a lot more than putting together photos and text. It’s thinking through how a story should best meet people as it lives in the world,” she explained. While she expressed some sadness about leaving the arts beat, she is excited to help the newsroom reach a broader audience.
Continuing community involvement
Aguiar remains a fixture in the local scene, having served as a judge for this year’s SLUG Queen competition and appearing at events such as the BRiGHT Parade and the upcoming home show. She also hinted that she will still write copy from time to time.
The promotion also opens a position for a new arts and culture correspondent. Lookout is conducting a national search for a journalist with a passion for the arts similar to Aguiar’s. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply through the Lookout job portal.
In the interim, former summer intern Leo Heffron returns for an extended post‑graduate internship, adding further support to the newsroom staff.
