Survey Shows Half of D.C. Area Residents Thriving, Others Struggle with Costs

The Greater Washington Community Foundation, in partnership with Gallup, released its first “Voices of the Community” survey since 2023, probing how residents across the District of Columbia, Montgomery County, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun, Prince George’s, Fairfax County, Fairfax City and Falls Church feel about life today.

Thriving and Struggling Split Nearly Evenly

Overall, about half of respondents reported they are thriving. Strongest thriving numbers appeared in D.C. (53%), Montgomery County, MD (52%), Arlington and Alexandria, VA (61%), and Loudoun County, VA (59%). In contrast, Prince George’s County, MD, Fairfax County, Fairfax City and Falls Church, VA each saw more than half of respondents saying they are struggling or suffering.

Key Drivers of Well‑Being

Danielle Yates, managing director of marketing and communications for the foundation, said the data show a clear link between basic needs and overall optimism. “People who said they didn’t struggle to pay for food or housing were two times more likely to be thriving,” Yates explained. “Those who rated the availability of good jobs as excellent were also twice as likely to say they’re thriving, as were those who rated affordable housing as excellent.”

Federal Workforce Reductions Hit D.C. Hardest

More than half of D.C. residents – about 66% – said they felt the impact of recent federal workforce reductions, the highest share among all jurisdictions surveyed. Across the region, a majority in almost every area reported a negative impact from federal turmoil, with at most 5% seeing any positive effect.

Housing Costs Remain a Top Concern

Housing affordability continues to dominate worries. Roughly one‑third of respondents expressed anxiety about covering rent or mortgage payments. Fourteen percent admitted they have considered leaving the D.C. area, citing cost of living and lack of affordable housing as the primary reasons.

Where Residents Want Help

When asked where solutions should originate, respondents overwhelmingly pointed to local and state governments, emphasizing the need for “very localized solutions” to address cost pressures and quality‑of‑life challenges.

Optimism Fades Compared to Pre‑Pandemic Levels

Only 18% of those surveyed believe conditions will improve, down from 29% in 2020. Likewise, just 16% feel the current changes will benefit them, compared with 27% in 2020. Beyond housing, concerns about healthcare and food security persist.

Yates concluded, “We’re still in a troubling space, and we need to focus our attention on fixing these persistent problems that have not gone away despite our efforts over the last decade.”
