Fort Vancouver’s Oldest Surviving Building Serves Lunch Now

Around eleven-thirty on a Tuesday, Officer’s Row is quiet enough that you can hear the flag rope tapping against its pole. The Grant House sits at the north end of the row, a white clapboard structure built in 1849, and for the last several years it has been quietly operating as a full-service restaurant. Most people driving along Evergreen Boulevard don’t know that. The ones who do tend to come back regularly.

The building itself is the oldest surviving wood-frame structure in the Pacific Northwest. It served as quarters for a succession of Army officers, and Ulysses S. Grant lived here briefly in the early 1850s when he was stationed at Fort Vancouver as a young quartermaster. None of that history is shoved in your face when you sit down. There’s no laminated trivia card at the table. The dining room is calm and well-lit, with high ceilings and windows that look out over the lawn and the row of restored houses stretching south.

The menu changes with the seasons but tends to focus on Pacific Northwest ingredients done without unnecessary complexity. Lunch might bring a bowl of clam chowder thick enough to justify the cold weather, a smoked salmon sandwich on house-baked bread, or a straightforward burger that gets ordered at probably half the tables. The price range is modest — most lunch entrees land between twelve and eighteen dollars — and portions are honest. Dinner is a step up in formality and price, with entrées running into the mid-thirties, but the room handles it without feeling stiff.

Brunch on weekends draws a consistent crowd, particularly for the eggs Benedict and the French toast. If you show up without a reservation after ten on a Saturday, expect a wait. Weekday lunches are calmer and often underused, which makes them the better choice if you want to actually look around the building without feeling rushed.

The bar program is competent and locally minded — a handful of Clark County wines, regional beers on draft, and cocktails that lean on Pacific spirits without being precious about it. The Old Fashioned is well-made. The Wallowa Rye they use in it is worth asking about.

Parking is along Officers Row or in the lot just west of the building, and it’s generally easy to find. The address puts you about ten minutes from downtown Vancouver, and Fort Vancouver National Historic Site’s main visitor center is right across the open field to the south, so combining a meal here with a walk through the reconstructed fort makes for a full afternoon without much driving.

What makes the Grant House worth noting isn’t just the history, though the history is legitimately remarkable. It’s that the food is good enough to justify coming here on its own terms. A lot of restaurants with this kind of setting coast on atmosphere and serve indifferent food. The kitchen here doesn’t do that. The chowder alone is reason enough to make the trip on a gray November afternoon, and in Vancouver, gray November afternoons are plentiful.
