In 2015, Exantus broke into the Tipton family’s home and fatally stabbed 6-year-old Logan Tipton. The boy’s father and two sisters were also stabbed but survived the attack. The Tipton family has expressed their disappointment and frustration with the justice system, feeling that Exantus received a lenient sentence. Kentucky lawmakers have responded to the case by passing House Bill 422, also known as Logan’s Law, which revises the state’s insanity defense and mandatory reentry supervision rules. However, the law does not apply retroactively, and therefore did not affect Exantus’s sentence or release.

State Rep. Daniel Fister, who helped champion the legislation, called Exantus’s release ‘heartbreaking’ and vowed to continue working to strengthen Kentucky’s criminal laws. ‘No family should have to endure this kind of trauma, and every Kentuckian deserves confidence that our justice system will protect innocent victims and hold violent offenders accountable,’ Fister said.
