The Kentucky Derby Museum is launching a free virtual field trip option for fourth and fifth grade students nationwide. This program combines videos, printable activities, and the online game platform Kahoot to teach kids about various subjects, including derby history, language arts, math, and economics.
Virtual Field Trip Details
Teachers can select which subject they want the field trip experience to focus on from three different curriculum options: Derby Basics with a focus on English language arts and writing, Derby History with a focus on social studies, and Derby Math with a focus on mathematics and economics. The virtual field trip can also be a student-lead or teacher-lead experience, depending on the educator’s choice.
Museum Director of Education Emily Dippie said this helps bring the experience of the derby to students who cannot travel to Churchill Downs. “Not every student is going to have the chance to come here and experience this incredible museum to see this incredible racetrack. But that doesn’t mean they can’t understand the role that the Kentucky Derby plays and why it’s important, and also how it’s just so much fun,” Dippie said.
