The Fern Creek neighborhood is getting a new library, which is expected to serve over 130,000 visitors each year. The 18,000-square-foot branch will include meeting rooms, community gathering spaces, technology resources, a children’s area, and a teen section.
A Space for the Community
Heather Lowe with the Louisville Free Public Library says libraries provide an important space where people from all backgrounds can come together. “The most beautiful thing about libraries is it is one of the few spaces in our community where everyone can come together, regardless of their background, for free,” Lowe said.
The new branch replaces the original Fern Creek Library, which closed in 2019 due to budget cuts. The project is funded through a combination of federal, state, city, and private dollars. Mayor Craig Greenberg highlighted the library’s potential to support students, seniors, small businesses, and job seekers.
Residents nearby are excited to have a library back in their community. Annette Harris, who lives nearby, said, “I have little grandkids now, so they’ll want to be taken there. This is definitely going to be a great place for the community.”
The new Fern Creek Library is expected to open to the public in early 2027.
