Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance as Ebenezer Scrooge at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Depp, dressed in an overcoat and top hat, scolded attendees and called them “very, very strange people” before shuffling back inside a faux snow-lined storefront marked with a “Scrooge and Marley” sign.

The convention, which began on Thursday, features a variety of panels, including one on vampire storytelling with the K-pop group ENHYPEN and director Catherine Hardwicke. Other highlights include cosplay contests, autograph booths, and panels on video games and movie poster art.
Marvel Studios is using Comic-Con to build hype for the December release of “Avengers: Doomsday,” and DC Studios will showcase its HBO “Lanterns” series with a “training headquarters” activation in the Gaslamp Quarter.
