As the new school year begins, 96,000 Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) students returned to class, marking a major operation that required hours of planning and execution. Despite some initial challenges, the district reported a largely successful first day.

Parental Concerns

Some parents, like Lauren Keeling, expressed excitement and nervousness as their children started at new schools. Keeling’s daughter began her first year of middle school, and while she was initially nervous, she was looking forward to being with friends from her elementary school.

Other parents, such as Melinda Schaffer, reported changes in their schedules due to the district’s bus arrangements. Schaffer’s child had previously been a bus rider but now requires her to pick him up due to changes in the traditional school bus service.

District Efforts

JCPS Superintendent Brian Yearwood spent the day visiting several schools and emphasized the district’s efforts to ensure a smooth start to the year. While some parents experienced issues with the newly launched ‘My Ride K-12 App,’ Yearwood assured that the district is working to correct these problems.

Yearwood expressed optimism about the upcoming year, stating that the district’s goal is for each child to feel a sense of belonging and the opportunity to thrive and be successful.
