Iranian women’s soccer players granted Australian asylum speak out on Tehran protest

Two former Iranian women’s soccer players, Atefeh Ramezanisadeh (34) and Fatemeh Pasandideh (22), have spoken publicly for the first time since seeking refuge in Australia. In a “60 Minutes” interview aired Sunday, the athletes explained why they remained silent during the Iranian national anthem at the Women’s Asian Cup in March, describing the act as a protest against Tehran’s brutal crackdown on nationwide demonstrations.

Personal testimony and faith‑driven courage

Ramezanisadeh told the Nine Network, through an interpreter, that she “wanted to stand with our people” and could not in good conscience sing an anthem while her compatriots were being killed for protesting. “The only thing that gave me peace and a clear conscience was not singing it,” she said, adding that her silence could have meant “any form of torture” for her.

Pasandideh echoed the sentiment, noting that her silence was the “absolute least we could do for them” as Iranians risked their lives on the streets.

Australian response and political support

Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke confirmed that at the time of the Asian Cup, none of the team had been offered asylum, but later the government extended humanitarian visas. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese informed U.S. President Donald Trump that four players and a team manager had accepted the offers.

President Trump used his social‑media platform to call for the team’s asylum and personally phoned Prime Minister Albanese to discuss the matter, underscoring the United States’ support for those fleeing oppression.

Life in Brisbane

Ramezanisadeh and Pasandideh now play for the Wynnum Wolves, a semi‑professional club in Brisbane, and were granted Australian citizenship in August. While they miss their families, they remain steadfast in their belief that Iran must change so its people can live freely and thrive.

Both women said they have had limited contact with relatives but understand that their families have not faced punishment. They expressed hope that one day they could return to Iran under a different, more just regime.

Community impact

The players’ story has resonated with local faith‑based and family‑focused groups in Brisbane, who see their courage as a testament to the power of standing up for truth and liberty. Their experience highlights the importance of offering humanitarian refuge to those fleeing tyranny, a principle embraced by many community organizations across Queensland.
