There is a garden on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus that most visitors drive right past on their way to something else, and every time I think about that, I feel a small, personal sense of triumph. Because I found it. And now, tucked into my Saturday mornings between a coffee from a nearby café and a slow walk along Lake Mendota, the Allen Centennial Garden has become one of my favorite places in this entire city.
Located just off Babcock Drive on the southern edge of campus, the Allen Centennial Garden covers nearly two acres and sits in beautiful, almost conspiratorial proximity to the UW’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. It was established in 1991 to celebrate the university’s centennial, and it has been quietly perfecting itself ever since. The garden is free to enter, open year-round, and maintained with a level of care that would make most professional botanical gardens tip their hats in respect.
What makes this place genuinely special is how much variety it packs into a compact space. You move through distinct garden rooms — each one designed around a different theme or tradition — and the transitions feel almost theatrical. One moment you are standing in an English cottage garden bursting with foxglove and hollyhock, and the next you have stepped into a formal French parterre where low boxwood hedges trace geometric patterns across raked gravel. There is a shaded woodland garden with hostas and ferns that feels positively hushed on a warm afternoon. There is a cutting garden, a fragrance garden, a rose garden, and a kitchen garden where vegetables and herbs grow in tidy, photogenic rows.
The garden is at its most spectacular in late spring and early summer, when the peonies are out and the climbing roses begin their slow, determined takeover of the pergola near the center of the grounds. But I have visited in October, when the ornamental grasses turn amber and the seed heads of the coneflowers catch the low afternoon light, and found it just as rewarding in a quieter, more contemplative way.
Because it is affiliated with the university, the Allen Centennial Garden also functions as a living classroom and demonstration space, which means the plantings are chosen thoughtfully and labeled carefully. You can actually learn something here without feeling like you are being lectured to. The interpretive signage is clear and interesting, written for curious adults rather than reluctant schoolchildren.
There is almost always a photographer working the angles somewhere in the garden, and on weekend mornings you will occasionally encounter a small wedding party using the pergola as a backdrop. It is that kind of beautiful — the kind that other people want to stand in front of and remember.
Parking is available along Babcock Drive, and the garden is an easy walk from the Memorial Union if you want to build it into a longer campus afternoon. Go once and you will start wondering how you missed it for so long.
