Central Iowa Water Works says the facility has operated for 179 days so far this year. The previous record number was set in 2015 with 177 days.
Nitrate Removal Facility
The nitrate removal facility operated by Central Iowa Water Works set a new record this week for the number of days it has run in a year. The milestone was confirmed Thursday by CIWW, the regional water authority for 600,000 business, government and residential customers.
There are eight vessels in the nitrate removal facility, which allows water with high levels of the pollutant nitrate to be treated. That process ensures drinking water from CIWW meets the Environmental Protection Agency standard for nitrates, 10 milligrams per liter.
The facility has run Jan. 6-March 2 and then from March 9-July 9. This year, the facility began operating in January after there were unusually high rates of nitrates in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers in the winter months.
