A recent study by Wallethub found that Indiana is one of the least independent states in the U.S., ranking 44th out of 50 states. The study was based on 39 metrics across financial, social, economic, and federal independence.
Indiana’s Rankings
Indiana’s financial dependency rank was 38th, its government dependency rank was 36th, and its international trade dependency was 48th. However, the state did rank 6th in job market dependency, which was one of its best rankings.
According to Wallethub Analyst Chip Lupo, Americans place a high value on independence, which is reflected in the nation’s history and the ability of individuals to be self-reliant. However, with significant inflation affecting people across the country, many Americans are finding it harder to remain financially independent.
Idaho was ranked the most independent state, with a low percentage of jobs supported by exported goods and a low portion of its GDP coming from exports. The state also demonstrates strong financial stability, with the 11th-lowest poverty rate in the country and the 10th-lowest share of millennials living with their parents.
