An Argentine citizen, Alejandro Saul Rico, was taken into custody on June 19 in Silver Spring, Maryland, for overstaying his visa and having a criminal history that includes a conviction for assault and a prior arrest for a sex offense.
Visa Overstay and Criminal History
Rico originally entered the U.S. through Miami on a tourist visa in 2006 to visit Disney World. He remained in the country long after his authorized stay had expired in 2016, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated that this case highlights the issue of illegal aliens overstaying their visas and committing crimes in the U.S. The Trump administration has been working to restore integrity to U.S. visa programs and ensure that the privilege is not used as a “one-way ticket” for criminals to enter the country and exploit U.S. laws.
