A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Johan (Joan) Sebastian Duran Guerrero, 25, of Colombia, in an intersection in Biddeford, Maine, outside of Portland. Guerrero’s wife, Karolina Rojas Alvarez, made a public statement about her husband’s death, saying she wants people to remember him for who he was, not how he was killed.
Guerrero’s Background
According to Alvarez, Guerrero worked multiple jobs to provide for their family, including their 3-year-old daughter. He was authorized to work in the United States and had a Social Security number. However, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated that Guerrero had illegally entered the United States on September 1, 2023, via the southern border, and was granted a work permit in May 2025.
Alvarez said Guerrero was supposed to spend the day with their daughter on the day he was killed. She expressed her grief, saying, ‘My soul is broken. He was everything to me.’ Guerrero’s sister, Angie Carolina Duran, also spoke out, demanding justice and clarification on what happened.
Investigation and Lawsuit
The incident is under investigation, and a lawsuit is expected to be filed on behalf of Guerrero’s family. The family’s attorney, Benjamin Gideon, will be representing them in the case.
