Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and his opponent, Democratic State Rep. Gina Hinojosa, have outlined their plans to address home and car insurance costs in the state. Abbott proposed a roof fortification grant program, which would provide up to $10,000 for homeowners to reinforce their roofs against wind and hail damage.
Abbott’s Plan
Abbott’s plan also includes allowing auto insurers to consider good driving habits when setting premiums, which would reward safe drivers with lower insurance costs. Additionally, Abbott has promised property tax relief and empowering taxpayers by limiting local government spending and allowing voters to roll back local property rates.
Abbott has also directed state agencies and higher education institutions to cut their base budget requests by 3% in preparation for the upcoming legislative session.
Hinojosa’s Plan
Hinojosa, on the other hand, has proposed sending $1,500 refund checks to every Texas family, funded by the state’s Economic Stabilization Fund. Hinojosa has stated that this plan is intended to restore trust in the government and provide relief to Texans struggling with the costs of healthcare, groceries, gas, and housing.
