Shreveport, La. – On Sunday, Aug. 23, Hunters for the Hungry will hold its annual “Clean Out Your Freezer Day,” giving hunters and community members a chance to clear freezer space and help families across north Louisiana.
Drop‑off locations and times
Donors can bring unopened, properly packaged frozen foods to several designated sites. In the Shreveport‑Bossier area, the primary drop‑off point is Smith Family Farms North, located at 601 Kingston Road, Suite 400, in Benton, open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana will collect all contributions from the Shreveport‑Bossier region and distribute them to families in need. The food bank will also accept additional donations from Aug. 24‑28, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at its facility on 285 Mount Zion Road in Shreveport.
Additional sites serving neighboring parishes
Other nearby locations are participating. The Natchitoches Parish Council on Aging will host a drop‑off on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at 1016 Keyser Avenue. Items collected there will benefit the Food Bank of Central Louisiana and local agencies.
In Ruston, donors may stop at Dubach Deer Factory & Smokehouse, 599 Highway 167 in Dubach, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Contributions at this site will be directed to the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana.
Why the event matters
Hunters for the Hungry emphasizes that the clean‑out day serves a dual purpose: it helps hunters free up freezer space before the upcoming hunting season and, more importantly, it provides a steady flow of nutritious frozen foods to families struggling with food insecurity. All donated items must be unopened and properly packaged to ensure safety and quality.
Organizers note that the event has grown each year, reflecting strong community support for both the hunting tradition and the mission to alleviate hunger. By partnering with local farms, food banks, and community centers, the initiative leverages existing networks to reach a broad cross‑section of residents.
How to participate
Anyone with frozen foods that meet the donation criteria is encouraged to bring them to the nearest drop‑off point. Volunteers will be on hand to receive items, answer questions, and ensure that donations are sorted correctly for distribution.
For more information, donors can contact Hunters for the Hungry via their website or call the Smith Family Farms location during operating hours.
The annual freezer cleanout underscores the collaborative spirit of north Louisiana, where hunters, farmers, and charitable organizations unite to support families and uphold the values of self‑reliance and neighborly care.
