The Chrysler Museum of Art Is Worth Every Minute of Your Time

There is a particular kind of afternoon that Norfolk does better than almost anywhere on the East Coast, and it usually involves wandering into the Chrysler Museum of Art with no real agenda and emerging two hours later feeling quietly transformed. That is not hyperbole. That is just what this place does to you.

Situated in the graceful Ghent neighborhood — one of Norfolk’s most charming historic districts, full of tree-lined streets, independent coffee shops, and lovely old homes — the Chrysler sits alongside the Hague inlet like it has always belonged there. And in many ways, it has. The museum has been a cornerstone of cultural life in Hampton Roads since 1933, though its permanent home on Olney Road has grown and evolved considerably since then. Today the building itself is worth admiring before you ever step through the front door: a grand Italianate structure that manages to feel both monumental and genuinely welcoming.

And here is the thing that surprises most first-time visitors: admission to the permanent collection is completely free. Walk in off the street, no reservation required, and suddenly you are face to face with one of the finest art collections in the American South. The Chrysler holds more than 30,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of art history. Ancient Egyptian artifacts share space with Renaissance paintings, American modernism, and works by Rubens, Renoir, and Gauguin. There is a stunning collection of Art Nouveau glass that stops people in their tracks, and an entire wing dedicated to one of the most impressive assemblages of Dale Chihuly glass sculpture you will find anywhere.

The Glass Studio, housed in a separate pavilion just steps from the main building, is genuinely one of Norfolk’s most underrated experiences. You can watch skilled glassblowers work molten material into luminous forms in real time, and on select days you can even try your hand at the craft yourself through a workshop. Watching a gob of glowing glass become something beautiful in under ten minutes has a way of recalibrating your sense of what is possible.

The museum also runs an excellent rotating exhibition schedule, so there is almost always something new to discover alongside the permanent galleries. Past shows have brought in major international works and traveling retrospectives that rival what you would find at institutions in Washington or New York.

Plan to spend at least two hours, though three goes quickly. Stop in at the Museum Cafe for lunch or a coffee before you head upstairs. Pick up something from the thoughtfully curated gift shop on your way out. Then take a slow walk along the Hague before dinner, because Ghent has no shortage of excellent restaurants within easy walking distance.

Norfolk has a lot to offer visitors, but the Chrysler Museum of Art is the kind of place that makes you reconsider everything you thought you knew about this city. It is ambitious, beautifully organized, and absolutely free to explore. That combination is rare anywhere. In Norfolk, it is something to celebrate.
