Sen. Ed Markey seeks sixth term as he faces primary challenge from Rep. Seth Moulton

Boston – Senator Ed Markey announced his intention to run for a sixth term in the United States Senate, positioning his campaign around a slate of progressive policies and a looming primary contest with Congressman Seth Moulton. The 80‑year‑old lawmaker, a 50‑year veteran of Congress, told NBC10 Boston that he feels more energized than ever and is prepared to serve another six‑year term if voters give him the mandate.

Age and experience

Markey, who would be 86 at the end of a new term, addressed questions about his age directly. “If I couldn’t do the job, I would step down,” he said, adding that any senator unable to fulfill duties should resign, regardless of age. He emphasized that his ideas remain youthful, pointing to his partnership with Senator Bernie Sanders on a Medicare‑for‑All plan and other health‑care reforms.

Policy priorities

The senator described the current health‑care system as “sick” and called for a comprehensive overhaul. He highlighted his work on expanding coverage, lowering prescription‑drug costs, and investing in clean‑energy initiatives. Markey also reiterated his support for holding former President Donald Trump accountable, saying impeachment would be appropriate if Democrats regain a House majority, noting the need to address the alleged 2020 election interference.

Primary challenge

Rep. Seth Moulton, a former Army officer and member of the House Armed Services Committee, has signaled an intent to challenge Markey in the Democratic primary. While the two have not yet faced off in a debate, both candidates have discussed health‑care and technology policy in separate interviews. Markey’s campaign stressed continuity and experience, whereas Moulton is expected to present a younger, military‑service perspective.

Implications for Massachusetts voters

Massachusetts voters will decide in the June primary whether to keep a long‑standing liberal voice in the Senate or opt for a newer representative. The race underscores broader questions about seniority, generational leadership, and the role of federal legislators in pursuing progressive reforms. Local Democratic organizations are mobilizing volunteers to educate voters on both candidates’ records.

Looking ahead

Markey invited constituents to join a live “Issue Sit Down” broadcast on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., where he will discuss his platform in more detail. The interview will be streamed on NBC10’s website and available as a podcast. Voters can also watch a separate conversation with Rep. Moulton to compare the two candidates’ visions for the Commonwealth.

Both campaigns have urged Massachusetts residents to participate in the upcoming primary, emphasizing that the outcome will shape the state’s representation in Washington for the next six years.
