Human remains found 15 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson home, no link yet

On Tuesday, Pima County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue deputies responded to a desert location near the intersection of West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard in Arizona. Human remains were discovered at the site, which lies roughly 15 miles from the Catalina Foothills residence of 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie.

Investigation status

According to the sheriff’s department, the remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time. At this time, investigators have found no indication that the remains are linked to the ongoing investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Guthrie vanished from her Tucson‑area home on February 1, after being last seen on January 31. Police believe she was taken from her residence without her phone or essential medications. The case has drawn national attention, in part because her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, is a co‑host of NBC’s “Today” show.

Recent developments in the missing‑person case

In July, authorities released the full text of a ransom note and a follow‑up letter addressed to the Guthrie family. The letters claimed that Nancy Guthrie had died, a claim that investigators say is intended to generate new leads. DNA evidence collected from the Guthrie home continues to be analyzed in an effort to identify any suspects or confirm the whereabouts of the missing mother.

Savannah Guthrie has repeatedly appealed to the public for information, offering a $1 million reward for credible tips that could lead to her mother’s recovery. The family remains hopeful that new information will emerge.

Law‑enforcement response

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department emphasized that the search for Nancy Guthrie remains a top priority. While the discovery of the remains is a significant development, officials cautioned the public not to jump to conclusions until forensic analysis is completed.

Deputies are coordinating with state and federal agencies to process the site, collect evidence, and determine the identity of the remains. The sheriff’s office has asked anyone with information about the desert area or the remains to contact them immediately.

Community impact

The Guthrie case has resonated deeply with the Tucson community, prompting numerous volunteer search efforts and a heightened awareness of personal safety. Local faith groups have organized prayer vigils, emphasizing the importance of family, community, and the constitutional right to a safe and secure home.

As the investigation continues, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law‑enforcement. The sheriff’s department will provide updates as new information becomes available.
