Spring Hill, Fla. – A heated argument outside Jiggers Bar on St. Andrews Boulevard escalated into a gunshot just before midnight on Monday, prompting a multi‑agency response that cost Hernando County taxpayers thousands of dollars.
What happened
According to Sheriff Al Nienhuis, two men and a woman arrived at the bar. An altercation broke out between the two men over who would sit in the front passenger seat next to the female driver – whether it would be her boyfriend or the other man. During the fight, one man fired a shot at the other.
After the discharge, a gun was placed on the bar’s floor, and the shooter claimed he had just shot a man in the parking lot. Deputies, a police dog and a helicopter were deployed to locate the alleged victim.
Search effort and cost
The sheriff’s office launched an extensive search of the surrounding area. While deputies combed the parking lot and nearby streets, the supposed victim sent a social‑media message to the shooter that read, “You shot me.” When investigators later tracked down the man, he told them he had not been shot and that neither party wished to press charges.
Sheriff Nienhuis noted that the operation, which included aerial assets and a K‑9 unit, cost the department and local taxpayers a “tremendous amount of money” for an incident that could have been avoided.
Legal follow‑up
No charges have been filed at this time. The sheriff said he will consult with the state attorney’s office to determine whether any criminal statutes were violated.
“You just can’t make this stuff up,” Nienhuis said. “We spent thousands of dollars trying to search for the supposed victim and all over who was going to sit in the car on the ride home or wherever they were going to go after leaving here.”
Why it matters to residents
The episode highlights the importance of responsible conduct on public roads and the financial impact of unnecessary law‑enforcement deployments on the community. While no one was injured, the incident serves as a reminder that personal disputes can quickly become costly public‑safety concerns.
