Boynton Beach, Fla. – A dog who endured severe abuse in Boynton Beach is beginning a hopeful new chapter at Blessed Paws Rescue. The animal, previously called Rex, has been given the name Hunter as part of the shelter’s current “musician” naming theme, honoring country singer Hunter Hayes.
New name, new start
Rebecca Saxton, trainer and board member of Blessed Paws Rescue, explained the philosophy behind the name change: “When they’re coming in, we want to give them a new start. The best way we can do that is by giving them a new name, a new identity. They’re going into a new life, and hopefully the next part of their life is going to be the best.” Saxton said the shelter is currently using musicians’ names for new arrivals, and Hunter’s lively personality seemed to fit the moniker.
Adjusting to a home environment
Hunter, about four years old, is adapting to life inside a home for the first time. “He’s getting used to being confined in a home environment. He’s much happier being with a person than being separated, but he seems to be doing fairly well with that,” Saxton noted. The dog barks frequently throughout the day, a sign Saxton says is normal as he learns his new routine.
Background of abuse
Police in Boynton Beach arrested the dog’s former owner on felony animal‑cruelty charges after surveillance video captured the man slamming the animal to the ground and yanking him by the leash. The suspect, who was homeless at the time, was seen repeatedly abusing the dog in the footage. The investigation confirmed the abuse but did not establish whether Hunter ever served as a service dog.
Health and behavioral care
Hunter still requires medical attention before he can be placed with a permanent family. He is being treated for an ear infection, has overgrown nails, and is coping with anxiety stemming from his traumatic past. Saxton said the shelter is using behavioral medication and CBD oil to help calm his nerves: “In regards to anxiety, it’s really kind of hard to say if it’s just a constant thing, if it’s because he’s been taken away from what he knew, and he’s getting used to it.”
Adoption process
Blessed Paws Rescue is currently accepting adoption applications for Hunter. The organization emphasizes that prospective owners must be active, patient, and prepared to care for him for the remainder of his life. Saxton added that while Hunter shows progress, he will need ongoing training and regular veterinary check‑ups.
