Hamilton County Celebrates Foster Youth Graduates at Record-Breaking Event

In a heartwarming display of community support, Hamilton County hosted its largest-ever Celebration of Dreams event, honoring nearly 100 foster youth graduates. This annual event, organized by Hamilton County Job and Family Services, took place at Maple Ridge Lodge in Mount Airy and marked a significant milestone for the graduates and their supporters.

Community Support and Achievements

Family members, caregivers, mentors, and caseworkers gathered to celebrate the achievements of these young individuals as they prepare to embark on their next chapter. Among the graduates was Mariah Myers, who is set to attend Xavier University this fall. Myers, who plans to study psychology, business, and law, expressed her desire to help children in foster care, drawing from her own experiences.

Myers, the eldest of six siblings, shared how Sheva Guy, who adopted her younger brothers, played a crucial role in her success by allowing her to focus on her education. Guy remains a steadfast supporter, confident in Myers’ future accomplishments.

Stories of Perseverance

Other graduates shared similar stories of perseverance and the vital role of their support systems. Azura Hutsell credited her caseworker for helping her overcome family challenges and ensuring she had transportation to school. Nathan Cornist highlighted the importance of his mentor, Desmond Burton, who kept him motivated and focused on his goals.

Burton emphasized the need for consistent support for foster youth, stating, “My goal is to make sure none of these children feel like they’re in this alone.”

Looking Ahead

Hamilton County currently has custody of over 2,000 young people, with about 20% aged 16 or older. Leaders from Job and Family Services stress the importance of events like Celebration of Dreams, which provide these young individuals with an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and acknowledge the support systems that have helped them succeed.

For Myers and her fellow graduates, the evening was not only a celebration of their diplomas but also a testament to their resilience and potential. “To show them, no matter who our parents are, where we come from, or what we’ve been through, we can do it,” Myers said, inspiring others with her determination.
