The Toledo Police Department has announced plans to open a new community policing station, filling the void left by the closure of the D. Michael Collins Northwest Substation last year. The new station will be situated in a strip mall on Sylvania Avenue, near the intersection with Tremainsville Road and Jackman Road, adjacent to the Library Village neighborhood.
Community Engagement Focus
At a recent Toledo City Council public safety meeting, Police Chief Mike Troendle revealed the department’s intention to sign a lease for a space next to the former Family Video building. The station will occupy the westernmost part of the multiunit building, with city council having allocated $500,000 for its establishment earlier this year.
While the exact functions of the new station are still being finalized, Chief Troendle indicated that it would not operate around the clock. Instead, it may serve as office space for community service officers, a venue for meetings, and a place for district units to complete reports. This approach aligns with the department’s commitment to fostering community relationships and enhancing public safety through increased accessibility and engagement.
Addressing Community Needs
The decision to open a new station comes in response to community needs for a local policing presence following the closure of the previous substation in the summer of 2025. The new location aims to provide a more accessible point of contact for residents and strengthen the police-community partnership in the area.
As the Toledo Police Department moves forward with this initiative, the community can anticipate a renewed focus on collaborative efforts to address local safety concerns and enhance neighborhood security.
