Global Tensions Loom Over Singapore’s Shangri-La Defence Summit

The annual Shangri-La Dialogue, a key defence summit in Singapore, is set to focus on pressing global issues such as the ongoing conflict in Iran and rising tensions over Taiwan. The event, scheduled from May 29 to 31, gathers ministers, generals, and diplomats for discussions that could shape regional security dynamics.

U.S. Involvement in Iran

U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth will be a central figure at the summit, as the U.S. continues its blockade on Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz amidst a three-month-old conflict. President Donald Trump has instructed his representatives to avoid rushing into a deal with Iran, maintaining the blockade until a formal agreement is reached. This situation has disrupted a crucial global oil and gas supply route, affecting economies worldwide, particularly in Asia.

Asian allies are closely watching for signs of U.S. policy shifts, concerned about the potential distraction of the Trump administration due to its involvement in the Middle East and other international disputes. Political scientist Chong Ja Ian from the National University of Singapore notes the anxiety over U.S. policy unpredictability and its implications for regional stability.

China’s Role and Taiwan Tensions

Uncertainty surrounds China’s participation in the summit, as it has not confirmed whether Defence Minister Dong Jun will attend. This follows last year’s absence, where China accused the U.S. of vilifying its policies. The summit occurs amid heightened tensions over Taiwan, with China increasing its military presence around the island, which it claims as its territory. Taiwan, however, rejects these claims.

Analysts anticipate discussions on how smaller states navigate the U.S.-China rivalry, with a focus on maritime issues in the South China Sea and defence spending. Vietnam’s President To Lam, newly installed as both Communist Party chief and president, is expected to emphasize Hanoi’s neutrality while defending its maritime claims against China.
