Ferrari’s Journey to Electrification: The Luce Unveiled

Ferrari, the legendary Italian sports car manufacturer, is taking a bold step into the future with the unveiling of its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce. This move marks a significant milestone in Ferrari’s journey towards electrification, a path it began over a decade ago with hybrid technology in its Formula One racing cars.

Hybrid Beginnings

The journey started in 2014 when Ferrari introduced hybrid powertrains in Formula One, utilizing systems to recover kinetic energy during braking, a technology that had been in use since 2009. This innovation laid the groundwork for Ferrari’s future in hybrid and electric vehicles.

In May 2019, Ferrari launched the SF90 Stradale, a 1,000 horsepower, four-wheel-drive hybrid, marking its first mass-produced hybrid model. This was followed by several other hybrid models, including the 296 family, the 849 Testarossa, and the limited edition F80 supercar.

Leadership and Vision

In September 2021, Benedetto Vigna, a physicist with a background in chipmaking, took over as CEO to lead Ferrari’s electrification efforts. Under his leadership, Ferrari announced a multi-year business plan in June 2022, aiming for electric models to comprise 40% of its lineup by 2030, aligning with the European Union’s 2035 ban on new petrol-engine cars.

Building the Future

By June 2024, details of Ferrari’s first electric car emerged, with a price tag exceeding €500,000. Ferrari inaugurated a new ‘e-building’ at its Maranello complex dedicated to producing electric cars and parts, alongside hybrids and traditional combustion-engine models.

Despite plans to launch a second electric vehicle by 2026, Ferrari delayed these plans to 2028 due to a lack of demand for high-performance EVs. However, the company remains committed to its electrification strategy, unveiling technology for its first electric car in October 2025. The Luce, a four-door, four-plus-seat vehicle, will feature a specially designed sound system to amplify vibrations from its powertrain, creating an electric Ferrari roar.

Looking Ahead

In February 2026, Ferrari released teaser images of the Luce, revealing its name, which means ‘light’ in Italian. The design involved collaboration with LoveFrom, co-founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. Ferrari plans to open pre-orders for the Luce in March, following positive client feedback, with deliveries expected to start in October 2026.
