Myanmar Military Intensifies Efforts to Control Strategic Border Regions

Myanmar’s military has launched renewed offensives in several border regions, focusing on areas with critical rare earth deposits and vital trade routes. This comes a month after a new administration took control of the country.

Strategic Border Regions

Under the leadership of new military chief Ye Win Oo, the military is aggressively pushing to reclaim strategic strongholds from ethnic armies. These efforts are concentrated in Kachin State, known for its heavy rare-earth elements, Chin State on the Indian border, and a trade corridor in Karen State near Thailand.

Ye Win Oo recently informed soldiers that the military had secured Falam town in Chin State and an important route between Mandalay and Myitkyina in Kachin State. The military’s strategy aims to regain control over crucial communication and trade routes in Myanmar.

Ethnic Army Resistance

Despite the military’s efforts, ethnic armies have fortified their defenses. The Kachin Independence Army, which took control of certain areas in 2024, has prepared for military advances, particularly around Chipwi and Pangwa townships.

In Chin State, resistance fighters have strategically retreated from towns like Falam and Tonzong as the military employs heavy aerial bombings. The Chin National Front has reported these developments, highlighting the ongoing conflict’s intensity.

Impact on Trade and Peace Efforts

The military’s actions also target the Myawaddy-Kawkareik highway, a key trade route near Thailand. The Karen National Union, an ethnic army involved in the conflict, has expressed skepticism about peace talks proposed by former junta chief-turned-president Min Aung Hlaing.

Efforts to bring opposition groups to the negotiating table have faced challenges, with ethnic armies citing a lack of trust due to the military’s repeated violations of peace agreements.
