Gene-Edited Beagles May Help Dog Allergy Sufferers

Scientists have successfully created hypoallergenic beagles using a gene editing technique called CRISPR. The dogs, named Alfie and Bailey, have been genetically modified to produce less of a protein that causes allergic reactions in humans.

How it Works

The CRISPR technique involves editing the genetic code inside dog skin cells to switch off the gene responsible for producing the allergy-causing protein. The edited genetic code is then transferred into eggs that are implanted into a surrogate mother, resulting in the birth of puppies with the modified gene.

Matt Walker, a geneticist and one of the scientists involved in the project, has been able to interact with Bailey without experiencing any allergic reactions. He can feed her, play with her, and even have her sleep on his lap without any issues.

While this breakthrough is promising, it may be years before gene-edited dogs are available to the general public. Scientists need to monitor the long-term health effects of the genetic modification and find ways to make the process more affordable.

Some experts have raised concerns that the availability of gene-edited dogs could discourage people from adopting shelter animals. However, the scientists involved in the project believe that it could also increase the number of people who are able to own dogs, which could lead to more animals being adopted from shelters.

Future Research

Future research will focus on testing the gene-edited dogs on more people with pet allergies to ensure that they can provide relief from symptoms. The scientists also hope to test the technique on other breeds of dogs and service animals to see if they can breed an allergy-free line of puppies.
