Food recalls surge in 2025‑2026: Experts explain why it feels daily

Recent headlines about lettuce, jalapeños and other staples have left many Americans wondering if food recalls are happening every day. While the perception is real, experts stress that the trend is driven by larger, more visible outbreaks and improved detection, not a sudden collapse of food safety.

Recall numbers are up, but the picture is nuanced

Data through the first nine months of 2025 show a roughly 14% increase in FDA‑regulated food recalls compared with 2024, according to Darin Detwiler, Ph.D., professor at Northeastern University and author of *Food Safety: Past, Present, and Predictions*. The volume of food affected rose even more sharply, a sign that some recalls involve massive product batches.

Detwiler cautions readers to look beyond the raw count of recalls. “A handful of very large recalls can expose far more consumers than dozens of smaller ones,” he said. The July recall of Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce, linked to a cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened over 17,000 people, exemplifies how a single event can dominate the news cycle.

Why the recalls seem constant

Recall notices now reach consumers through news alerts, social‑media feeds, retailer communications and even phone notifications. “In recent years, FDA‑regulated food recalls have been occurring at a rate of more than one recall event per day on average,” Detwiler noted, explaining why the public perceives a daily stream of alerts.

Several factors contribute to the heightened visibility:

  • More aggressive testing by manufacturers and public‑health agencies.
  • Rapid dissemination of information via digital platforms.
  • Increased media coverage of large‑scale outbreaks.

Is the FDA’s role changing?

Some observers have pointed to staff reductions at the FDA, CDC and USDA as a possible cause. Ellen Shumaker, Ph.D., director of outreach for the Safe Plates program at North Carolina State University, says the cuts have not fundamentally altered the recall process.

Wade Syers, D.Soc.Sci., food‑safety specialist at Michigan State University, adds that recalls are initiated through a network of manufacturers, federal and state regulators, public‑health agencies, healthcare providers and testing laboratories. “Most recalls are triggered when a problem is identified through company testing, consumer complaints, product testing, outbreak investigations, or regulatory activities,” he explained.

In June 2025 the FDA made a remote‑inspection policy, originally a pandemic response, permanent. This shift from on‑site inspections to paperwork‑based reviews has sparked debate. While remote assessments can be efficient, Detwiler emphasizes that “physical inspections remain an essential part of the system” because they allow regulators to see conditions on the production floor.

Who bears responsibility?

Detwiler argues that the primary duty for safe food lies with the companies that produce it. “Compliance with regulations is the minimum expectation; prevention should be embedded into operations every day,” he said. He warns against blaming the FDA alone, noting that a robust recall system can actually demonstrate that the safety net is working.

“A recall can be evidence that part of the food‑safety system worked. Someone found a dangerous product and acted to remove it,” Syers said. The goal, he added, is to identify hazards before they reach consumers and cause illness.

Is the U.S. food supply still safe?

Despite the heightened recall activity, experts maintain that the United States continues to have one of the safest food supplies in the world. Shumaker points to the extensive testing, surveillance and rapid response mechanisms that keep risks in check.

Consumers are encouraged to stay informed, follow recall notices for specific products, and practice basic food‑handling safety at home. While the frequency of alerts can feel overwhelming, the system’s ability to pull unsafe items from shelves is a sign of vigilance, not panic.
