FDA Reopens Investigation into Salmonella Outbreak in Moringa Supplements

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reopened an investigation into a salmonella outbreak linked to dietary supplements containing moringa. This comes after 22 new cases were reported in four states, bringing the total to 119 infections across 36 states since the probe began last year.

Recall Details

Total Nutrition Inc., based in Deer Park, New York, has voluntarily recalled two products: TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa capsules and Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa capsules. These products, sold in 120-count bottles, were distributed nationally through major retailers including Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, Target, and the company’s own websites.

The company announced the recall on May 26, urging customers to dispose of the products immediately and not to consume, sell, or serve them. Consumers can request a refund by contacting the company with their order details and a photo of the product showing the lot code.

Health Risks and Investigation

Salmonella infection can lead to symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, it may cause complications like arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

The FDA is conducting further traceback of the supply chain to identify the contamination source and is collaborating with partners to sample products and determine if additional items might be affected. Of the 79 people interviewed, 89% reported consuming a product containing moringa leaf powder, suggesting a common source of contamination.

Safety Measures

Consumers are advised to check their supplements and ensure they do not possess the affected lots. The recalled products are packaged in white HDPE bottles with 120 clear capsules filled with green moringa powder. The specific lots recalled include:

  • TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa – Lot: 2507199 Exp. 09/2027, Lot: 2512-304 Exp. 02/2028, Lot: 2793 Exp. 02/2028
  • Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa – Lot: 2507199 Exp. 09/2027

As the investigation continues, the FDA and CDC are committed to ensuring public safety and preventing further illnesses.
