Henderson Coach Faces Rare Cancer, Community Rallies for Support

In Henderson, Texas, the community is coming together to support Preston Weeks, a dedicated coach and teacher at Henderson Middle School, as he faces a daunting battle with stage three oral cancer. At just 26 years old, Weeks is preparing for major surgery after what began as a small sore in his mouth developed into a serious diagnosis.

Community Support

Weeks, who is also a former quarterback for Stephen F. Austin State University, has been a positive influence on many young lives in East Texas. His commitment to his students and players is now being reciprocated as the community rallies to support him through a fundraiser aimed at covering his medical expenses.

“It’s definitely a life changer, dealing with something like this,” Weeks shared, reflecting on the sudden shift in his life. His initial symptoms included a persistent sore, swelling, and changes in his speech, which led to the discovery of the cancer’s advanced stage.

Facing the Challenge

Weeks has remained resilient, drawing on the same mindset he instills in his students. “I love seeing kids grow,” he said. “I’ve always been part of a team, and I try to find the positivity and happiness in it.” His wife, Emily Weeks, expressed the mix of fear and determination they feel as they prepare for the upcoming treatment plan.

The recommended treatment involves major surgery scheduled for early June, followed by a lengthy recovery period that will include radiation and additional therapy. The family has set up a fundraiser to help with the financial burden of surgery, hospital bills, and ongoing treatment.
