Extreme Heat Warning issued for Dallas‑area counties Tuesday

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Dallas‑area counties of Dallas, Tarrant, Denton and Collin on Tuesday. Forecasts call for temperatures climbing as high as 108°F, and with low humidity the heat index could feel like 109°F.

What the warning means

An Extreme Heat Warning signals “extremely dangerous heat conditions” and is intended to alert the public to take steps that protect health and safety. The warning is in effect from noon until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Health precautions for families

Officials recommend staying indoors in air‑conditioned spaces whenever possible. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade, drink plenty of water, and wear lightweight, loose‑fitting clothing. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles; a car can reach 129°F in just 30 minutes when the outside temperature is 95°F.

Heatstroke can begin when a person’s core temperature reaches 104°F, and a core temperature of 107°F is considered lethal. Parents are urged to check on relatives, neighbors and anyone who may be vulnerable, especially the elderly and those with medical conditions.

Protecting outdoor workers

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises employers to schedule strenuous tasks for early morning or evening hours, provide shaded or air‑conditioned rest areas, and ensure workers have access to water. Frequent rest breaks can reduce the risk of heat‑related illness.

If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion—such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea—or heatstroke—such as hot, dry skin, rapid pulse, confusion—move them to a cool, shaded location and call 911 immediately.

Pet safety

Pets also need fresh, cool water and shade. They should not be left outside for extended periods in extreme heat. Bringing them indoors during the hottest part of the day is the safest option.

Potential fire risk

The NWS notes that minimal precipitation will keep the region dry, increasing the likelihood of grass fires through at least the first half of the week. Residents should remain vigilant for fire hazards and report any smoke or flames promptly.

These precautions are especially important for families, seniors, and anyone who spends time outdoors. By staying informed and taking simple steps, North Texans can protect their health and safety during this extreme heat event.
