Los Angeles Parks Department launches citywide Hoops Challenge for all ages

The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks announced that it will roll out its inaugural L.A. City Hoops Challenge next month, bringing organized basketball competition to neighborhoods across the city. The citywide series will take place at 36 recreation centers, giving residents a chance to play, stay active, and connect with their local parks.

Program goals and community impact

According to department officials, the Hoops Challenge is designed to promote physical activity, encourage healthy lifestyles, and strengthen community ties. “The L.A. City Hoops Challenge reflects our commitment to creating opportunities that inspire healthy lifestyles, strengthen community connections, and make recreation accessible to everyone,” said Elaine Piha, principal recreation supervisor, in a statement. The department hopes the event will become an annual tradition that brings families and friends together through the game of basketball while supporting the broader vision of “a city where parks bring people together, programs spark growth, and communities thrive.”

How the competition works

Starting on Sept. 12, participating recreation centers will host local qualifying events. The tournament features separate male and female divisions across five age groups: 8‑10, 11‑14, 15‑17, 18‑49, and 50 and older. Each age group will compete in hourly slots, beginning at 9 a.m. for the youngest participants and continuing through 1 p.m. for the 50‑and‑older division.

Winners from the qualifying rounds will advance to regional and city championship competitions. City champions will receive prizes that include two Los Angeles Clippers home‑game tickets, personalized jerseys, and public recognition as Hoops Challenge city champions.

Getting involved

Registration, schedules, and tournament rules are available on the department’s website at LAParks.org. Residents are encouraged to sign up early, as spots may fill quickly, especially in popular recreation centers.

The Hoops Challenge aligns with the department’s broader effort to expand recreational programming that supports families, promotes fitness, and offers safe, structured activities for youth and adults alike. By leveraging existing park facilities, the city aims to make organized sports more accessible without requiring additional construction or private facilities.

Looking ahead

Department officials see the Hoops Challenge as a stepping stone toward a larger calendar of citywide sports events, potentially including soccer, volleyball, and other team activities. The goal is to create a sustainable model that can be replicated in future years, fostering a culture of active, engaged neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.
