Doctors at Connecticut Children’s in Hartford are warning parents about the dangers of electric scooters after a recent rise in injuries. The hospital saw a record number of patients over the weekend, with five kids treated for electric scooter injuries. Between May and July, there have been 143 electric scooter-related traumas.
Risks Associated with Electric Scooters
Amy Watkins, manager of the Connecticut Children’s Injury Prevention Center, said that electric scooters can be hazardous, especially for young riders. “We’re seeing head trauma, concussions, and even traumatic brain injuries,” said Watkins. “We’re seeing lower face injuries from the jaws to the teeth.” Electric scooters can reach speeds of up to 20 MPH, which can create dangerous situations for riders.
Watkins advises parents to take precautions to keep their children safe. “Put them on a regular bicycle, and make sure they know what the rules of the road are,” said Watkins. “Make sure they practice, they know how to steer, how to stop safely, etc. They put that protective gear on.” Watkins also recommends buying electric scooters that are UL certified to ensure safety.
