Downtown Santa Barbara Looks to Pop‑Up Events to Keep Fiesta Momentum Alive

Santa Barbara, Calif. – After the annual Old Spanish Days Fiesta drew thousands of visitors to the downtown core, city leaders and merchants are exploring ways to preserve that energy year‑round. While a long‑term master plan is still in development, many community members say temporary events could keep the streets lively without the expense of major reconstruction.

Community input points to low‑cost, high‑impact ideas

Residents surveyed about what makes downtown appealing said it isn’t just shopping or dining; it’s the sense of gathering with friends in a vibrant public space. “It’s a place where we can bring visitors to see the city with us,” one respondent noted.

Suggested activities range from outdoor music and street theatre to petting zoos, cultural fairs and a seasonal movie night in De la Guerra Plaza, a space that currently sits largely unused.

Local workers and artists welcome pop‑up programming

Catherine Chapple, a downtown employee, said pop‑up events would be attractive because they require little infrastructure change. “You wouldn’t have to rebuild the streets for millions of dollars per block,” she explained, adding that some blocks feel “kind of quiet” and could benefit from more activity.

“Live music, vendors, performances, and dance school programs would be an awesome opportunity for kids,” Chapple added.

Michael Schmidt, an artist who sells his work on the promenade, echoed the sentiment. “Music and maybe some busking. I’d rather see money spent on getting people like that in here than on new sidewalks,” he said.

Local trumpeter Miles Julian described how live music changes the atmosphere. “It gives people a great feeling and changes their day,” he said.

Community advocate Cainan Birchim emphasized the broader need for festive communion. “People need humanity right now, especially in a place like Santa Barbara,” he said.

Looking ahead to the new library plaza

Chapple also mentioned the upcoming library plaza as a potential hub for future events. The city plans to open the space later this year, and residents hope it will host regular performances and gatherings.

City officials have not yet set a timeline for a formal downtown revitalization plan, but they acknowledge the public’s desire for more frequent, low‑cost programming. The consensus among business owners, workers and visitors is clear: a series of pop‑up events could sustain the festive spirit that the Fiesta brings each August.

What’s next?

Stakeholders are expected to present a list of proposed activities to the downtown association later this month. If approved, pilot events could begin as early as the fall, giving Santa Barbara an opportunity to test what works before committing to larger infrastructure projects.
