Diana Shnaider Upsets Aryna Sabalenka to Reach French Open Semi-Finals

In a stunning turn of events at the French Open, Russian tennis player Diana Shnaider defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka to secure her place in the semi-finals. The match, played under challenging windy conditions, saw Shnaider come back from a set and a double break down to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Shnaider’s Remarkable Comeback

Shnaider, the 25th seed, displayed remarkable resilience and determination, winning the last 10 games of the match. Despite being two points away from defeat, she managed to turn the tide against Sabalenka, who had previously reached six consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals.

“Obviously, the first time playing Aryna, I was super nervous,” Shnaider admitted. “I feel like I was trying to focus point by point, not thinking about the score. She’s the world number one, so I just tried to do my best. I just had to fight for every point.”

Challenging Conditions

The conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier were difficult for both players, with the wind affecting shot-making precision. Sabalenka initially found her rhythm, opening up a 5-1 lead in the first set. However, as the wind intensified, Shnaider capitalized on the situation, breaking Sabalenka’s serve and eventually taking the second set.

In the final set, Shnaider’s forehand proved to be a decisive weapon, causing problems for Sabalenka and allowing Shnaider to break for a 2-0 lead. She maintained her momentum to seal the victory, marking her first appearance in a Grand Slam semi-final.

Looking Ahead

Shnaider will face Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the semi-finals. This victory adds to the list of surprises in the women’s draw, which has already seen the exits of defending champion Coco Gauff and four-time winner Iga Swiatek.

Sabalenka, last year’s runner-up, was visibly disappointed after the match, as her impressive streak of Grand Slam semi-final appearances came to an end.
