Detroit Principal Reassigned Amid Disciplinary Concerns

Jeffery Robinson, the longtime principal of Paul Robeson Malcolm X Academy in Detroit, will not return to his leadership role following several disciplinary incidents and performance concerns. Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Superintendent Nikolai Vitti confirmed that Robinson is currently serving a 30-day suspension without pay, approved by the school board earlier this month.

Upon completion of his suspension, Robinson will be reassigned as a ‘principal on special assignment’ under the direction of another principal at a different school, yet to be determined by the district. Reginald Kirkland, former principal of Carleton Elementary School, has been appointed as the new principal of PRMX and has already been introduced to staff and families.

Robinson has faced disciplinary action before, including an administrative leave last year after allegations of misconduct involving a student. Despite these issues, Robinson is recognized for his expertise in African-centered education and has been a part of Malcolm X Academy since its inception.

Community Reactions

Tahmyya Johnson, vice president of the PRMX Parent Teacher Association, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the district regarding Robinson’s suspension and reassignment. She learned about the new principal through a digital platform and noted the absence of direct communication from school administrators.

Community opinions on Robinson’s leadership are mixed. During a recent school board meeting, a community member criticized Robinson’s discipline and moral integrity, while a teacher and an attendance agent praised his support and leadership, emphasizing the school’s performance under his guidance.

Robinson’s future role remains uncertain, but the district’s decision reflects ongoing concerns about his conduct. The transition to new leadership at PRMX marks a significant change for the school community.
