In a significant address at the U.S. Air Force Academy graduation in Colorado Springs, Vice President JD Vance emphasized the crucial role of human judgment in military operations involving artificial intelligence. Speaking to over 900 newly commissioned officers, Vance underscored that while AI is transforming warfare, it must never replace human decision-making in matters of life and death.
Human Oversight in AI Warfare
Vance, a Marine Corps veteran, highlighted the unique moral standards that guide American military operations. He stated, “AI will inevitably change warfare, and, of course, as you’ve learned over the last four years, it already has. But one of the things that makes Americans unique, that makes you as war fighters unique, is that we wage war justly.”
Aligning with the moral perspectives of religious leaders, Vance stressed that decisions over life and death must remain in human hands to uphold the moral values of the nation’s ancestors. He encouraged the graduates to use AI as a tool to enhance their capabilities but warned against relying on it for moral decisions.
Prepared for the Future
The Air Force Academy, praised by Vance as one of the world’s premier training grounds, has equipped these new officers with the skills to integrate AI responsibly in their military careers. Among the 931 cadets commissioned, most will serve in the Air Force and Space Force, with a few cross-commissioned into other military branches.
One graduate expressed confidence in their preparation, stating, “I think it’s been so carefully curated. We’re as prepared as much as we can be.”
