This holiday weekend, Americans are taking to the highways and airports in record numbers, despite the significant rise in gas and airfare prices. According to AAA, 45 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home, surpassing last year’s record of 44.8 million travelers.
Travel Costs on the Rise
Airfares have increased by over 20% compared to last year, as reported by travel booking site Kayak and major airlines. Additionally, gas prices have surged to an average of $4.55 per gallon, up $1.38 from the previous year, influenced by the ongoing Iran war.
James Smith, a traveler from New Mexico, exemplifies the determination to travel despite costs. He spent $550 on a flight to Newark, New Jersey, to spend the holiday weekend with friends at the Jersey shore. ‘When it comes to travel, it’s one of the only things I’ll treat myself on,’ Smith shared.
Adapting Travel Plans
While higher costs are a concern, they haven’t significantly deterred leisure or business travel. Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics, noted that those most affected by rising prices typically weren’t frequent travelers. ‘More than half of leisure hotel spending is by people making $150,000 or more,’ Sacks explained.
However, some travelers are adjusting their plans to save money. Laura Lee Blake, CEO of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, observed that travelers might skip hotel stays, opting instead to stay with family or friends. Frantz Simon and his family, for example, are driving from Long Island to Georgia for a family graduation, choosing to stay with relatives to cut costs.
In June Lake, California, near Yosemite National Park, rental manager Connie Lear noted that regular visitors are shortening their stays. ‘Instead of doing seven days, they’re doing five or four,’ she said.
Creative Solutions
Some travelers are finding innovative ways to maintain their travel plans without overspending. John Mercagliano from a Philadelphia suburb canceled a planned trip to London due to costs, opting instead to use airline miles for a trip to Arizona to visit friends.
Despite financial challenges, the commitment to family and cherished gatherings remains strong, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of American travelers.
