A man is dead after being shot by a deputy in Sanford early Saturday as deputies were trying to disperse a large block party, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the incident happened shortly after 1 a.m. on Sipes Avenue in the Midway community. Deputies were responding to a noise disturbance when they encountered the large crowd. A deputy found himself in the middle of a situation involving gunfire within the crowd. Investigators said they believe there were at least two shooters involved.
During the incident, one of the armed individuals began firing shots. Authorities said a deputy, who was close to the armed man, engaged him and struck him. One of the armed individuals was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No deputies were injured in the incident, but at least two other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has been requested by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent investigation into the deputy-involved shooting, which is standard protocol in such cases.
Authorities said this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
