In Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, two Democratic candidates, Christina Bohannan and Travis Terrell, are competing for their party’s nomination. The district, which includes the Quad Cities, Keokuk, Iowa City, and Indianola, has been represented by Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks since 2021.
Christina Bohannan
Christina Bohannan, a law professor at the University of Iowa and a former state representative, is making her third attempt to win the seat. Bohannan previously ran against Miller-Meeks in 2022 and 2024, losing by 7 percentage points and less than a percentage point, respectively. Her campaign focuses on lowering costs for Iowans, ending congressional corruption, reforming healthcare, investing in education, and defending Medicare and Social Security. Bohannan emphasizes her commitment to prioritizing Iowa over special interests.
Travis Terrell
Travis Terrell, a healthcare professional from Ottumwa, positions himself as a working-class candidate. He advocates for Medicare for all, protecting water resources, expanding immigration pathways, and restoring power to the working class. Terrell has proposed two bills: the “American Stability and Dignity Act” for immigration reform and the “Women’s Rights and Freedoms Act” to protect women’s rights. He believes that towns like Ottumwa deserve better representation and opportunities.
The Democratic primary will determine who will challenge Rep. Miller-Meeks in the upcoming election, as both candidates aim to bring change to Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.
