The Scripps National Spelling Bee has returned to Washington D.C. this year, taking place at the historic Constitution Hall. This event, which began in 1925, continues to celebrate the linguistic talents of young spellers from across the United States and beyond. The competition, which spans three days, started on Tuesday and will conclude on Thursday night.

Event Details and Broadcast Information

The bee is being broadcast and streamed on various channels and platforms owned by Scripps, a media company based in Cincinnati. Preliminary rounds were available on Scripps Sports Network and spellingbee.com, with the quarterfinals and semifinals also accessible on these platforms. The finals will be broadcast on ION and other Scripps-owned channels, ensuring that audiences nationwide can follow the competition.

Competition Rules and Format

Participants in the Scripps National Spelling Bee qualify by advancing through regional bees hosted by sponsors across the country. Eligible spellers must not have progressed beyond the eighth grade or be older than 15. The competition involves multiple rounds, starting with preliminary rounds that include a spelling round and a vocabulary round. Successful spellers advance to the quarterfinals and semifinals, with about a dozen making it to the finals. In the event of a tie, a ‘spell-off’ may be used to determine the champion.

Notable Competitors and Prizes

This year’s competition features 247 spellers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, three U.S. territories, and five other countries, including The Bahamas and Canada. Among the notable competitors is Sarv Dharavane from Dunwoody, Georgia, who finished third last year. The winner of the bee will receive a custom trophy and over $50,000 in cash and prizes, including a $52,500 cash prize, reference works, and flight credits from Delta Air Lines.
